The Place Beyond the Pines (RTÉ 2, 9.30pm)

Ryan Gosling stars in this 2012 crime drama, about a motorcycle stuntman who leaves his job behind after he learns that his ex-girlfriend gave birth to his child without letting him know. The stuntman struggles to stay on the straight and narrow as he tries to reconnect with his son and become a part of his life.

Brendan O’Connor’s Time Out (RTÉ One, 9.35pm)

The new series of Brendan O’Connor’s talk-show kicks off with an interview with Majella O’Donnell. Majella’s on the show to discuss the breakdown of her first marriage, and her eventual fairy-tale romance with singer Daniel O’Donnell. She’ll also speak about how she managed to raise hundreds of thousands of euros for charity when she made her breast cancer diagnosis public.

Extraordinary Rituals (BBC Two, 9pm)

A look at the world’s most spectacular and extreme rituals. This episode looks at the way different cultures mark life events on our journey from cradle to grave. It includes a visit to the Brazilian rainforest, where a woman’s family perform rituals to protect her newborn son, by bathing him in medicinal plants and piercing his ears to open his sense to the world. Simon Reeve narrates, as he looks at dating rituals in China and how funerals in Indonesia are costing up to £170,000.
